One of the most exciting times in the life of a family is when a baby is added to the fold. Everything seems new and fresh and we are reminded of how wondrous our Creator God truly is. Subsequently, one of the most exciting times in the life of the church is when a family comes and dedicates that child to the Lord.
In reality, the dedication service itself involves THREE different dedications:
1 – Dedicating a child acknowledges God’s sovereignty not only over the child, but also over Mom and Dad. This service is one in which the parents present their child before God and His people asking for grace and wisdom in carrying on their responsibilities. Parents also come praying that their child might one day trust Jesus Christ as his / her Savior for the forgiveness of sin. The child is literally dedicated to the Lord’s keeping and figuratively placed into God’s hands, recognizing the child ultimately belongs to the Lord and parents are temporary stewards of that precious life.
2 – This service also involved the PARENTS dedicating THEMSELVES to the Lord and committing to raise their child in the Him and in His Church until that day comes when he / she is old enough to make his / her own commitment to Jesus!! The parents are committing to being the child’s “covering” – to pray for, provide for, and bless the child with a godly and nurturing home life. The ultimate goal of this care and love is the eventual decision on the part of the child to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ.
3 – Finally, here at Bruce Outreach Center, we put in one more “wrinkle” – not only is it the dedication of the baby; not only is it the dedication of the parents to raising the child in the Lord; but it is also the dedication of the church family to coming alongside of the family to accomplish their intended purpose of providing a godly home for the child. We recognize that this family belongs to our fellowship, thus it is this church’s responsibility to do all we can to encourage, support, and provide for this family so that it has a strong foundation in Christ.
I write all of this because this Sunday we will be having one of these services at Bruce Outreach Center. Scott and Christin W. will be dedicating their child, Sophia to the Lord!! Sophia will be committed into the Lord’s keeping!! Scott and Christin will be committing to be her covering and to provide a home conducive to her knowing and responding positively to the Gospel of Jesus Christ!! And we as a church will be committing to support this family. That support starts Sunday – by being at the service, demonstrating our support for the family, and committing to the responsibility of being a covering for the family. What an honor and a privilege!!!!
SO, please come and help us make this service complete – we start at 10AM!!
